The Commission on Christian Education is to be congratulated for a fantastic job in planning the Education Sunday program.
We had student graduates from pre-school to receiving a post-graduate doctorate, All but one of the College/Post Graduates wore their graduation robes, hats and paraphenalia. (There was one Zeta Phi Beta soror among the college grads. Congratulations Olivia!)
The format changed quite a bit this year. The names of those promoted were projected on the screen. The recipients came to the front one at a time to receive their certificates from Sister Jeannette Lee.. Seated in the pulpit were the HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES and the COLLEGE GRADUTES were seated in the audience.
The High School Graduates did a fantastic job of telling us who there were, where they have been, and where they expect to go.
Of course, they gave thanks to God, Rev & Mrs Robinson and their support systems. Each gave a short "farewell" addresss and it was through their words that we learned of their struggles and of those who helped get them to where they were at this point in their lives. Their addresses were individualistic and extremely delightful. I have known most of them since they were about 3 years old when they were in our Drama Group. You can imagine how I felt to see how they have grown over the past 12-13 years. (Bri, at three, was very shy and i was wondering at the length of her address. Not to worry! I'm sure her family was very proud of her---she being the little sister of two older brothers.)
We congratulate Shirley Hicks on her new status as Dr. Hicks. You probably know here best as the strong alto in the choir.
To each of the HS/College/Post Grad students was given a Holy Bible , presented by Sister Clarestene Stewart with the help of the Sunday School Superintendent Maria Oliver.
I didn't say that Sister Stewart asked that they read the Holy Bible and not let it collect dust????
A very enjoyable day. The clergy sat out in the first row, cheering them along!!
